Derick Otieno was born on February 4th, 2011. He joined the CGA nursery class in January 2017. His mother Roseline was only 15 years and in grade 8 when he was born. He has never known his father. His mother suddenly drowned while swimming in the lake. Derick was left in the custody of his grandparents. Their home is located up the hill opposite the lake and about 45 minute walk to school. The house is permanent. They do not have electricity or running water. They use paraffin for lighting and firewood or charcoal for cooking. They use a separate kitchen for cooking using firewood and fetch water from the lake which is about a 20 minute walk. They treat their water for drinking. They also do their bathing and cleaning at the lake. Derick’s grandfather does farming and his grandmother sells groceries at the nearby fishing village to support the family. Derick loves his grandfather very much and he also loves him. We hope Derick will find more love and comfort at CGA. 2019 Update: Derick is doing very well at CGA though has had some struggles with his health. He has had body rashes that are not very responsive to treatment. He was attended to by CGA Doctor and he is now picking up. He has grown and looks much bigger than when he joined CGA two years ago. He is one of the top ten students in his class and his best subject is English. He is a very quiet boy both in class and out, though very attentive in class. He still lives with his grandparents and not much has changed in his home. 2022 Update: This is Derick's 6th year at CGA. He is currently 11 years old and is in Grade 4. He has developed indiscipline tendencies, and is not respectful to his guardians. The student care department has talked to the guardian who has promised to work closely with the school in helping Derick. He is currently 162cms tall and weighs 35kgs. 2025 Update: Derick Otieno is 186.3 cm tall and weighs 55 kg. He is in grade seven and performs at an average level in his studies. Derick enjoys playing soccer and shows enthusiasm for the sport. At home, he now lives with his grandmother, as his uncles and aunties have completed their studies, with one of his uncles having recently graduated from university. As the youngest in the family, Derick carries great hope for the future, and with support, he has the opportunity to follow in their footsteps and achieve his dreams.
