Catherine Atieno was born on July 26th, 2017. She will join grade 1 in January 2025. She is a partial orphan and currently lives with her maternal aunt about twenty minutes’ walk from school. Her father passed away in mid-2023, leaving her and her four siblings under the care of her young mother. The aunt took Catherine and her younger brother to help offload some burden for the widowed sister-in-law who lives across the lake and does fishing to help support her young family. Catherine’s younger brother got an opportunity in CGA a year before and would be happy to walk alongside his older sister to school. They live in a three-room semi-permanent house with mud walls and tin roof. They have treated tap water within their compound and have electricity for lighting. They use both charcoal and firewood for cooking. Catherine sleeps on a bed and mattress under a mosquito net. The aunt is so excited to have her niece join CGA.
