In 2001, the parents and other members of the community in Lira, Uganda banded together to build a much-needed nursery school for the young children in their town. They created the Alpha Nursery School, which over time expanded into a primary school that also takes on boarding students. Now known as the Alpha Primary and Boarding School, it currently serves 520 students and has a solid reputation within the local community for providing the young kids with the skills they need to continue their education.

Now the school is in danger of being closed down by local authorities because of a lack of clean water and sanitation. The school’s toilets are starting to overflow, which poses a serious health risk, compounded by students who defecate out in the open as a result. What’s more, the nearest water source is miles away, which causes all sorts of complications, and children must spend several hours each day collecting water, which compromises the quality of their education.

With your help, we can build a well at the Alpha school so children and the community will have safe and easy access to clean water. Not only will it keep the school open and improve children’s health, but it will also make it easier for them to stay in school instead of spending hours each day fetching water. We will also build eco-sanitation flush toilets that don’t fill up like their current toilets do because the sewage is treated. What’s more, they’re relatively easy to install and maintenance free. Most importantly, it will help the school remain open so it can continue providing a quality education for its students and serving as an invaluable community resource.
