Help children start the new school year feeling prepared

Every child deserves a quality education. But many start the school year already feeling behind. No supplies. No backpack. Backpacks for Kids empowers 4000 children to begin their school year feeling excited and confident, fully prepared to learn.

Elementary kids need crayons (2400 boxes) and middle school kids need colored pencils (880 boxes).
$920

Spiral Notebooks for All!
It takes lots of spiral notebooks (8800!) to fill 4000 backpacks!

Total Funding Needed:
$2,680
Kids know when their families are unable to buy them the things that they need. Much less the things that they want. No designer clothes or fancy tennis shoes. School free lunch program. Always feeling like they are behind everyone else.

At the Samaritan Community Center, we believe that providing children with new backpacks filled with age-appropriate school supplies allows them to start the new school year on a "level" playing field with all the other children. It allows parents to spend money on other necessities such as food or utilities. Last year, we learned firsthand about a family that faced that dilemma when they learned of our Backpacks for Kids program when calling United Way's 211 hotline. A United Way employee emailed us the following:

"I had just fininshed calling everyone on the waiting list to tell them that there would be enough backpacks for them at the SCC. One family from Gravette had just moved to the area from another state. They had found themselves financially stretched with one of the family members recently going through open heart surgery. Since they are new to the area, they did not know where or how to receive assistance with school supplies. They called 211 and were put on the waiting list.

Once I told him that they will be receiving backpacks for all 5 of their kids, the father was elated and said "you are all such a blessing" and couldn't thank you enough for doing this for them. He told me that he and his wife were just trying to make the decision whether to buy their kids new shoes or school supplies for the school year. Now their children could have both!"
