Turn On The Water in El Porvenir, Nicaragua
The 110 families living in El Porvenir do not have access to clean water.
Together, we are going to
Turn On The Water for them. We are going to drill deep into the ground to access abundant, clean water and we are going to bring it directly to every home in town. Together, we are going to ensure that pesticides, fecal matter and other bacteria will no longer plague the community's water. With your help, children will no longer be at risk of getting sick every time they get thirsty. With your help, families will no longer have to spend time and energy on water collection.
Together, we are going to
Turn On The Water and change their lives!
Project Details and Cost
The El Porvenir project will be consist of a deep-water bore hole with a powered pump that fills an elevated tower that feeds a piping system that brings abundant water to each home in town. Every family will be able to walk outside and
Turn On The Water.
This project is a community led solution, where the community identified the need, participated in developing the vision for the system, will take part in the funding of the project, and will invest sweat equity into implementing the piping to their very own homes.
The total cost to
Turn On The Water is $51,700. Dynamic Water is committed to funding $12,500 of this. Our partners, SuNica have broken the funding into four phases: The Drilling, The Pump, The Tank, and The Pipeworks.
The Existing Condition
The current situation in El Porvenir sends most of the community to the shallow wells of <25' to fetch their drinking water. In the dry season, most of those wells dry up significantly, and in some cases completely.
Even when flowing, they are contaminated and lead to a host of health problems for the community including the Chronic Kidney Disease (
CKDu). SuNica tested El Porvenir's existing wells and the results showed a measurement of 300 colony forming units (CUs) of fecal contamination per 100 ml of water. For a reference, many recreational lakes or swimming areas in the US will shut down for anything over 200 CUs per 100ml.
The people of El Porvenir are drinking water that we wouldn't even be allowed to swim in! This is why we need your help to
Turn On the Water.Sometimes, El Porvenir's shallow wells can be dirty in a quite obvious way (above). Thankfully, this woman was planning to use this water for washing clothes only.
