COURSE DESCRIPTION

SJ 560 – Thailand and Sex Trafficking: Directed Research (3 credits) Students will learn about the history of trafficking and sexual exploitation in Southeast Asia as well as develop a working knowledge of the religious, cultural and economic factors contributing to sexual exploitation in Thailand. Students will also learn firsthand the role and philosophy of prevention work in helping poor and vulnerable communities. This course couples on the ground experience in Thailand with background reading on the subject and region and course research project.

ITINERARY

This trip will include visits to organizations in Bangkok, and Chiang Mai to understand the issue of child exploitation and trafficking in Thailand, and will ultimately end up in Chiang Rai, Thailand to visit The SOLD Project in order to learn about their prevention work.

January 10-12 Bangkok - Understanding Child Exploitation in Thailand

Arrive in Bangkok by the evening of January 10th

January 11 - Sightseeing in Bangkok, group dinner in the evening
January 12 - Learn about the nature of child sexual exploitation in Thailand, guided by a SOLD Project staff member. The experience will include visiting and learning from The Home of New Beginnings and walking through a red light district.

January 13 Chiang Mai

Early morning flight from Bangkok to Chiang Mai

Upon arrival in Chiang Mai, the group will meet with another anti-trafficking organization, The HUG Project. The evening will include dinner and visiting the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar. 

January 14-16 Chiang Rai - The SOLD Project

Early morning bus ride from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai

January 14 - Upon arrival in Chiang Rai, the group will visit the headquarters of The SOLD Project and learn about their work of prevention. The evening will include dinner and free time in the Chiang Rai Night Market

January 15 - Group elephant riding excursion, following by evening dinner and group debrief

January 16 - Return trip begins — Fly back to Bangkok and then home

TAKE NOTE
  • This registration includes donations to all partner organizations we visit.
  • The entirety of the registration is tax deductible.
  • The registration fee does not include the return flight from Chiang Rai to Bangkok. Our trip concludes in Chiang Rai, so It is requested that guests book their own flight from Chiang Rai to Bangkok on January 16th. 
  • The registration fee does include the flight from Bangkok to Chiang Rai (We book this for the entire group).
  • The registration fee does not include round trip airfare to Bangkok (BKK).
