Lake Victoria is the largest fresh water lake in African, and is home to almost 1,000 islands, a large portion of which are inhabited. Although water is in abundance, clean potable water can be hard to come by. To overcome this challenge, boreholes are drilled to tap into the earth's natural filtration system, accessing the water table and aquifers that are generally cleaner than the surrounding surface water, particularly that of Lake Victoria. Once the boreholes are drilled, a pumping system is installed to draw the water to the surface. These typically manual pumps are then used on a daily basis, multiple times by groups of people to bring water to their homes, which lack modern plumbing or access to public water systems. However, over time of constant, hard usage, these pumps and piping break  down and need rehabilitating. As a result, the locals are forced to walk sometimes miles to other sources of water, including from Lake Victoria itself. These other sources of water are highly contaminated with pollutants such as bacteria, sewage, parasites and such. This leads to devastating health consequences that ravage the local communities, especially the most vulnerable among them including children, elderly and the disabled.

HFIC has taken on the challenge of identifying 43 shallow wells and boreholes in 3 parishes that are in need of restoration. We have dispatched an engineer to examine each and every well and identify the repairs needed along with the budget, per well, to bring it back into service.
