Bugesera Women's Cycling Club was founded in 2019 by Serge Gasore, a Rwandan and former World Class runner. Serge and his wife moved back to Rwanda and started a primary school for children. Serge was familiar with the work of Team Rwanda Cycling and began to see the importance of getting women on bikes.
Bugesera is in the Eastern Province of Rwanda and one of the few areas where women are seen riding bikes for transport. Serge wanted to capitalize on the cycling culture already ingrained in the area. More importantly, he wanted to help young girls and women at risk by getting them involved in cycling.
In less than a year, Bugesera Cycling Club has climbed up the results ladder at the Rwanda Cycling Cup now placing at least one woman in the top five of these local races. Additionally, BCC is run by Liliane Kayirebwa, the first female club President in Rwanda.
Currently, Liliane is renting bikes which comes with a host of financial and development challenges. Our goal is to help him by 7 new bikes for his team. These bikes will stay at the Bugesera Cycling Club and be used for the top women on the team. In order to advance, these women need proper bikes that work, fit and are theirs to use to develop their talent.
We are running this fundraiser during the month of March in honor of International Women's Day on March 8th.
Make a difference for a young girl and help fund new training and racing bikes for this upstart team!
