New Hope Trip Details
On this trip, you will spend your first weekend exploring the capital, Guatemala City, which has hundreds of ruins that are over 3,000 years old. On this trip, Teachers2Teachers – International is partnering with Common Hope, a nonprofit serving the impoverished families of Guatemala. Their New Hope School consistently outperforms national averages. You will spend five days partnered with an interpreter and a teacher at this school. The trip will conclude in Antigua, known as Guatemala’s primary tourist destination.
Day 1: Friday
· Arriving at the Guatemala City airport, you will be met by a shuttle from the Hotel Barceló. The team will gather for dinner at a nearby restaurant. The rest of the evening will allow for unpacking, getting acquainted, and an early bedtime if you so choose.
Day 2: Saturday
· The day begins with breakfast at the hotel (huevos and watermelon juice are particular specialties). A morning planning meeting will end in plenty of time for you to visit the historic sites of Guatemala City. You and the team will take a tour of the highlights such as the capital square.
· You will have free time in the evening to eat at one of the restaurants that caught your eye, browse the shops, work out in the hotel gym or relax at the hotel pool.
Day 3: Sunday
· After a morning of breakfast and planning, you will have some personal time for packing, etc. After lunch at the hotel, the team will travel by bus across the city to the Common Hope guesthouse.
· Your hosts will welcome you and provide an orientation to the nearby community and school.
· Dinner and free time in the evening.
Day 4: Monday
· Before you begin your classroom observation day, the team will hold a brief orientation meeting. By watching the teacher and students in her/his classroom, you will have the opportunity to formulate the lesson you will deliver on Tuesday. The team will eat lunch with the teachers.
· In the afternoon, you will meet one-on-one with your partner and then gather for a school-wide professional development session.
· A traditional dinner at the guesthouse will be prepared from local ingredients.
Day 5: Tuesday
· During the morning, you will deliver the lesson you have prepared. One-on-one meetings and a group professional development session will occupy the afternoon.
· Dinner will be provided at the guesthouse. Afterwards you may want to take a walk around the neighborhood, organize a pick-up basketball game, or just relax.
Day 6: Wednesday
· You and your partner will co-teach a lesson in the morning. Your one-on-one meeting afterwards will provide an opportunity to review the experience together. Next will come a professional development session.
· Questions for discussion in the evening after dinner are “What did or did not go as well as you’d like?” and “How will this knowledge affect you tomorrow?”
· If time allows, movie and/or game night will furnish entertainment.
Day 7: Thursday
· This morning you will support your partner as she/he delivers the lesson you prepared together. You will have individual meetings to debrief and wrap up the week, followed by lunch.
· The team will hold a short concluding session before dinner.
· Evening time will be for packing.
Day 8: Friday
· Today is for the students! They will lead the lesson, with you and your partner guiding them.
· The team and all the partners will participate in an awards banquet, where each participant will receive a certificate of completion.
· You will depart immediately after the ceremony to drive to Antigua, where you will stay in the neighboring Common Hope guesthouse.
· The evening will be open so you can explore the myriad delights of Antigua. You can choose among souvenir browsing at the market, designing your own jade jewelry, and learning to make chocolate.
Day 9: Saturday
· After an early breakfast, the team will wrap up the week with a discussion session.
· You will have the rest of the day available to enjoy the beautiful architecture, wonderful restaurants, and world-class shopping of Antigua.
· A final dinner for the team will conclude this inspiring week.
