In December 2019, as part of its 20th Anniversary Celebration, the Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow (WCDH) in Eureka Springs established a needs-based scholarship fund for writers requiring financial assistance. Since established, the scholarship fund has raised over $3,700 and aided five writers. Our goal is to raise $2,380 to provide residencies to talented emerging writers and enable them to further their literary projects.

The first WCDH scholarship was awarded in January 2020 to Kholoud Sawaf who is working on adapting Arabic poetry into a stage presentation to tell a refugee's story through poetry and movement. The project had not yet been funded, so financial assistance for a residency was provided. Explaining why this was important to her writing, Kholoud said, “The Colony is designed to enhance artists’ creativity and allow them to do their best work.” Kholoud was born and raised in Damascus, Syria and holds an MFA in Directing from the University of Arkansas.

Emerging writers seeking residency time who need financial assistance beyond the standard subsidized rates are encouraged to apply for a scholarship. Scholarships are awarded on an as-needed basis depending on availability. The WCDH residency scholarship application process is the same as a general residency with the addition of a statement of need. Application fees are waived upon request.
