For over 5 years, Mercy House has been working with Rehema House in Kenya to come up with a long term sustainable plan to support the maternity homes outside of Nairobi.  And after much research and planning, it has been decided that water is the life-giving answer. 

Today 

Currently all the water for two homes supporting 30 residents and 8 staff is purchased from local vendors. The privately owned municipalities do not supply adequate water for the homes. Eight additional truckloads of water (21,000 gallons) are purchased for the homes each month. The source and quality of this water can be inconsistent. If the trucks are late on delivery then the residents and staff must conserve water for only essential needs. The two home are spending $1,500 U.S. total per month to maintain an inadequate supply of water.

The holding tank at the home has a capacity of 26,400 gallons. This would basically supply the home for one month. This tank is rarely more than ¼ full.

The Need

Drilling a water well for Rehema House would provide enough water for the two homes and additional water for surrounding homes and impoverished locals

Phase one: drilling survey - the survey has generously been donated and is now complete at a cost of $5,000.

Phase two and three: drilling and finishing - drilling (depth of approx. 300m or roughly 1,000 ft), casing, pipes, valves and finishing the water well at a cost of $35,000 U.S.  Savings to Rehema house would be realized in 40 months without selling water to neighbors or water services. Savings to Rehema House could be realized significantly sooner through selling excess water.

The borehole drilling will cost approximately $40,000; however, we have already had a generous donors contribute $15,000 leaving $25,000 needed to build the well.
