Hi everyone!
I have an amazing opportunity to travel to Cuba (hello, bucket list!) as part of a multidisciplinary team that will provide healthcare education and assessment to the local community- interacting with community members and local schools to promote health wholeness.
Who am I going with?
Loma Linda's Students for International Mission Service (SIMS) incorporates international service opportunities into academic curriculum in order to prepare health professions students for a career of effective global service and to promote the health of global communities. SIMS’ mission to provide students with high-quality service-learning opportunities empowers them to become caring, competent, and socially responsible health professionals who value service as a lifelong process.
What will I be doing?
Some of our activities will include:
No one is more surprised than me to realize I have been in the field of social work for over 20 years. Somewhere along the way I discovered I have a passion for making a difference, whether it is through providing direct services, case management, advocacy, education, or even writing policy to promote compliance all the new mandates and initiatives. Because I am a lifelong learner and teacher, I am back in school pursuing a second masters degree, this one actually in social work. LOL.
While I often complain about the focus on international charity when we have so many of our own citizens in need, this trip presents a unique opportunity for me to combine my many loves - travel, sharing knowledge, and making a difference.
