About This Field Partner

The African SOUP is an educational nonprofit organization that is advancing active learning in Uganda. Our rural community development programs work in tandem with our national Active Learning Project to deliver a model of education that engages learners, develops community, and inspires leaders across Uganda.

The SOUP began in 2009 as simply a feeding program to combat malnutrition for orphans and vulnerable children in rural Uganda. For nearly six years, The African SOUP has worked in eastern Uganda to empower the community members of Nabikabala Village and provide a “hand up” - not a "hand out" - to the vulnerable children of this community.

Today, the SOUP has fully invested in the future of these children, this community, and in the country of Uganda. At the community level, the SOUP boasts a quality primary school with a thriving campus, income-generating projects that provide a sustainable future for the SOUP while serving as living classrooms, and community programs that offer training and knowledge dissemination on health and wellness, sanitation, family planning, and malnutrition for the vulnerable babies in the village.

The SOUP's primary school is also the demonstration site for our Active Learning Project, a scalable, national teaching initiative that the SOUP is spearheading to engage learners more effectively. While currently in the soft pilot phase, this teaching method offers hands-on, conceptual understanding of the existing primary curriculum through the lens of critical, creative, and ethical practices skillsets.

Together, we can affect lasting, systemic change both in this village and throughout Uganda by providing hope, opportunity, education, and holistic care. Our SOUP school motto is: “Tomorrow is Ours,” and we believe that with your help, tomorrow is full of possibility
