StopMJD.org was incorporated as a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization in April 2011 by Daniel Lowe and his wife, Teri. Daniel is a Machado-Joseph Disease patient and Teri is his primary caregiver. Daniel’s oldest son has been diagnosed as well. StopMJD.com was founded to educate the public, fund research, and find a cure for Machado-Joseph Disease.
Machado-Joseph Disease has affected the Lowe family for many generations. Until the 1980s, members of the family with MJD were diagnosed as having Multiple Sclerosis, a common misdiagnosis until researchers discovered the genetic marker for MJD in 1983.
The board of directors and employees at StopMJD.org are all family members. We have come together to make a difference for the current and future generations of the Lowe family and the families of every MJD patient. Initial funding for operating costs has been provided by Daniel and Teri Lowe. This allows us to spend a larger portion of the donations received to fund research, support patients, families and caregivers, and educate the public.
