A message from the founder, Rachel:
I have learned many things in my mission travels – things that broke my heart – but I didn’t know how to move forward. I did know doing nothing was not an option. I began researching illiteracy, poverty, slavery, and the lives of women around the globe.
It was from this heart, broken but held in the hands of Jesus, that the 501(c)(3) non-profit ministry was launched: She Walks in Light International.
Having experienced the transforming power of the Gospel of Christ in my own life, I know the answer to any of the problems facing the world today is the Gospel. However, hungry tummies don’t have ears and ignoring the needs of our neighbors is not Christ-like. When I take all of the major issues causing human suffering in developing nations and pull the layers away until I get to the core, I often find illiteracy and poverty. The overwhelming thing about these two, illiteracy and poverty, is that they work in a cycle to create a horrible trap.
She Walks in Light International’s goal is to preach, teach, and advance the Gospel – equipping strong leaders for Christian service. Each one of us is called to be a missionary - where we are is our mission field. Each one of us has a vital role in the Body of Christ regardless of ethnicity, gender, poverty, or education. We have large groups of Christians, even here in the US, that are not advancing the Kingdom of God, because they do not understand how important their role is. Our belief and cry at the base level is - if you are saved you have a testimony. Go and tell it. Yes, let’s encourage Bible scholars. After all, my long-term vision is to give women a voice in Africa as the continent moves to the forefront of Christianity. However, a seminary education is not needed to share the transforming power of the love of Jesus.
Secondary to the Gospel though, is our vision to enable women to begin using what is in their hands, whether that is a sewing needle, hoe, or a skillet, to provide for their families. With the ability to read and use math, and a little help from the Body of Christ, these women can become entrepreneurs. This gives us a chance to get elbow-to-elbow with believers and unbelievers, evangelizing and discipling. Then the goal is to send them out to do the same in their communities, villages, and marketplaces. Women will have an impact on the marketplaces for Christ through hiring workers, training other women to be entrepreneurs, and coming into contact with new people. Also, the ability to read will allow those that are Christ-followers not only to grow in their knowledge of Scripture, but also be protected from false teaching, and to become stronger teachers of God’s Word.
We are developing methods in the interim to help women grow in their knowledge of scripture regardless of literacy. We are working on tools to equip women to fulfill the greatest calling given to us: to show and to tell - show what a life surrendered to Christ looks like and tell the good news that Jesus saves. This is essentially discipleship and evangelism. Show and Tell, a Bible study program, will help readers and non-readers learn basic concepts of the Gospel and give them a hunger for study and knowledge of Scripture. The Kingdom of God will advance to all parts of the globe when we realize our home is the mission field, and we must show and tell wherever that home may be.
We would be honored if you would partner with us as we strive to live-out the Great Commission. God’s heart is for the nations, all nations, to know Him – every man, woman, and child. Together let’s spread that message to all of the last, the least and the lost.
May God use this ministry for His glory!
