The unfortunate situation in Nicaragua, due to political and social unrest, is extremely volatile and unstable at this time. Back in July our family decided to spend the summer in Montana with family to take a break from the violence. In a four day turn around, we packed the house and left the country. The original plan when we left was to take a break and return.
We flew to Seattle and then drove to Helena, Montana, where Seth's brother and family welcomed us with open arms. We spent a little over a month trying to stay busy, looking for somewhat of a normal routine and watching the news of Nicaragua closely. However, by the end of July there still had not been much change to the situation, if anything, the situation had worsened. So, after much deliberation and prayer, we made the decision to move back to Raleigh and get Jane started on her high school career. This was a hard decision and continues to be since each of us had found a healthy rhythm and our place in Leon. Without a doubt, we had fallen in love with the people, culture, and work in Nicaragua.
For now, we are back in our home in Raleigh. It has been hard and we continue to face obstacles with this unexpected move, but we have not been without love and support!
Nicaragua continues to face extreme hardships and there have been no concrete resolutions to end the violence. Tragedy and trauma has effected most everyone in this sweet country now. However, if anything good could come from this situation, it is the fact that SuNica's Nicaraguan staff has continued to work through it all. It has been beautiful to see how these young Nicaraguans have push forward with the life changing work SuNica has invested in, even in the most difficult times. Without the monetary support and prayers stateside this would not be possible nor continue to be. The San Carlos community, where Seth was overseeing the water project, finished in mid-July! The modern bathrooms project that was just being planned has now begun. And, although not 100% complete, the El Limonal community center is being used and occupied weekly.
I can't express our gratitude enough to each of you. Though it may feel insignificant, you have played a major role in the work SuNica is doing. There is still much work to be done! Although we are finding our feet again, back in the States, and are no longer in need of monthly financial support, we ask that you will consider continuing to support SuNica. Please feel free to either continue donating through your Pure Charity account or reach out to the stateside director Alan Wilser,
alan@sunica.org.
Thank you for your commitment, participation, and belief in good, sustainable work. By loving us, you have helped support and enhance the life changing work SuNica is doing in Nicaragua.
Love, the Pierce Family
