About this trip

Thank you for your participation in a Help One Now Learning Journey! The Help One Now ethos is to remain invisible in our communities and focus our efforts on resourcing key leaders instead. Help One Now leads a limited number of Learning Journeys for committed, long-term supporters (Church Partners, Child Sponsors, Foundation members, and Love Hope Partners) each year. On these Journeys, emphasis will be placed on connecting with a community, building deep relationships with the local leaders, and brainstorming how you can unlock your human capital to partner together and support their work back home.

On this trip, we are excited for you to:

●  meet and fall in love with our local leaders and the children they serve

●  learn from our local leaders by hearing their stories and engaging in their communities. Doing this helps us, the visitors, understand the unique issues in different environments

●  see the impact of our projects firsthand and gain a new understanding of how complex working in these communities can be

●  become advocates of the country, people and orphans that you meet when you return home. You are the tribe; we need you to run with these stories and partner with us to make an impact

On this trip, you will be able to meet some of our leaders and fully experience some of the communities in which they serve. You will be able to see first hand how our leaders and their teams work to care for orphans and vulnerable children, empower families through education and community development, and dream ahead to find long-term solutions to help bring an end to the cycle of poverty. We will spend our time visiting with some of our key Haiti leaders; Jean Alix Paul, Gaétan Alcegaire and Jean St. Cyr. We will visit their schools, churches, and other community development initiatives to hear their stories, understand their vision, and see first-hand the effects of their work and our partnerships together.

Tentative Trip Schedule

Tuesday Sept 4: You will arrive in Port-au-Prince, the capital city of Haiti, and travel 40 minutes to Yahve Shamma, a community development initiative of Help One Now located in Pétionville, Haiti. You will spend the day in Pétionville to visit Agape and meet with Jean Alix.

Wednesday Sept 5: You will spend time visiting Jean Alix's businesses and St.Cyr's clinics and school/church. You will visit Yahve Shamma and Williamson Adrian Academy (a two story, 14 classroom schoolhouse built with funds from our first Legacy Project!)

Thursday Sept 6: You will hop on a quick 30 minute flight to Cap-Haitien, a city located on the north side of Haiti. You will spend the entire day in Ferrier Village, an anti-trafficking and education initiative of Help One Now. You will also have the opportunity to hear stories and tour the village and school as well as spend time with the kids.

Friday Sept 7: You will spend the morning at the beach and then will head to the airport after lunch to depart Cap-Haitien and return home!

A few things to note about this trip:

All expenses on the ground (meals, lodging, transportation) are included in the trip price, but any other costs associated with your trip would be your responsibility (those costs may include spending money, or appointments at a travel clinic before your trip, for example). We do allow our trip participants to fundraise through their registration pages in order to make those trip costs more manageable!

IMPORTANT NOTE: This trip cost does not include the cost of airfare. The trip cost with which you register will include all expenses, but you will be expected to make an additional payment once flights are booked to cover the cost of flights, too.

Those traveling are required to carry a passport with an expiration date further than 6 months away from the date of travel. Should your passport have already expired, or should your passport expire within the 6 months after your intended trip dates, you can mail in your old passport to get it expedited and renewed. HERE is where you can find more information on how to renew your passport.

If you are under the age of 18 and are traveling without a parent or legal guardian present, we will email out a form to get signed by parents or legal guardians, giving permission to travel out of country with the team!

In addition, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends various vaccinations for international travelers depending on your destination country. Please visit a medical professional or a travel clinic as soon as you know you are traveling abroad, as they may recommend particular vaccinations or medicine based on your destination, some vaccinations are not always immediately available, and some vaccinations need to be administered over the course of months. **Please ensure you are up to date on all routine vaccinations. These vaccinations include a measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine, polio vaccine, and a flu shot! Most of you are up to date on these anyway!**

Haiti does not currently have any required vaccinations; however, we recommend the Hepatitis A vaccination, a Typhoid treatment (pill or shot), and Malaria medication as well.

Some travelers choose to receive the Cholera, Hepatitis B, Rabies, and Yellow Fever vaccinations, but REST ASSURED: we know these lists may seem overwhelming, but all of these vaccinations are entirely optional and are merely precautions!

We’d love to encourage you to familiarize yourself with Help One Now’s philosophy regarding international mission. In preparation for your potential Learning Journey, please try to read Doing Good Is Simple by Help One Now’s founder Chris Marlow. Another great resource is When Helping Hurts by Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert.
