Nebobongo Hospital has many resource challenges. This hospital serves an area of approx. 260,000 people. The hospital often has 3-4 children per bed in the pediatric ward. They need more beds, meds & supplies. 100% of funds donated will go to Nebo.
In September 2012, there was an outbreak of severe malaria accompanied by salmonella, mainly among children in the surrounding villages. For the previous couple of months, children were pouring into this primitive hospital and there were often 3-5 children per hospital bed. In addition to this outbreak, several cases of the Ebola virus were diagnosed in a nearby village, putting the hospital in the “red zone” because of the dangerous proximity. The hospital needed very basic supplies such as rubber gloves, sodium hypochlorite, mops, plastic barrels for retrieving water, and much more. They did not have enough of these necessities to keep the hospital disinfected for the patients. Possible suspect cases showed up at Nebobongo as well, before the virus was contained.
With the generous help of our supporters, we sent funds to cover the first two tiers of the emergency response plan that Jean Claude reported to us. 100% of all funds given for this emergency response are going directly to the hospital. The We have also funded a water program for the hospital that will allow them more access to water at the hospital.
Our goal for this project is to fund improvements to the pediatric ward of the hospital. Ultimately, an addition to the hospital must happen so that they can take care of the many children who come to them sick and dire need of medical help. This project will cost at least $100,000. In the mean time, we are trying to provide necessities for the pediatric ward to function as best it can. There is a need for just about everything, from rubber gloves, to medicine, to water, to more beds. We are praying that you all will help us support this amazing hospital that is doing so much to serve the poor and needy in DR Congo.
