Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge's mission is to provide lifetime refuge for abandoned, abused, and neglected big cats, with an emphasis on tigers, lions, leopards, and cougars.
What exactly does this mean?
As a true sanctuary, we provide a lifetime home for the animals who come to the Refuge. This means we do not buy, sell, or trade animals. Once we take a new resident in, they have found their forever home.
Our emphasis is on tigers, lions, leopards, and cougars, but we also give refuge to other survivors of the pet trade, including: bears, bobcats, servals and exotic big cat hybrids (ligers, ti-ligers). Goober, a rhesus macaque; Flip, a coatimundi; and Cecil, a blue-and-gold-macaw also reside here.
Our number one priority is our animal residents. We provide them with special diets based on their individual needs, fresh water, spacious habitats, medical care, and enrichment to keep them active and healthy. Our goal is to allow them to be as "wild" as possible, meaning we are a completely hands-off facility and do not force them to perform tricks, breed, or pose for photo ops.
Where are our animal residents rescued from?
Many of our animal residents have been
kept as pets by misinformed individuals who were lead to believe it was possible to domesticate them, only to realize the danger, risk, and financial burden they posed in that situation.
Others were
exploited for profit, meaning they were forced into
unethical breeding, used in magic shows and other branches of the
entertainment industry, or made to be
playthings for handling and up-close photographical opportunities.
How will my donation be used?
Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge is opened to the public in an effort to further our mission and provide educational opportunities regarding the plights of big cats, creating advocates and inspiring change.
During the spring and summer months, over half of TCWR's donations come from visitors and guests. Sadly, due to COVID-19, Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge is temporarily closed for an undetermined amount of time. Donations made on NWA Gives Day will support TCWR's animal residents by providing food (such as produce for our bear residents), medical care, enrichment, and habitat upkeep. Your support will get our animal residents through these trying times.
