About this Fundraiser

I'm going to Uganda with Hope Speaks!

Hi friends!
As most of you know, I'm currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology…annnnd it has been a wild ride, to say the least! While working as a school secretary back in 2014, I was first exposed to the need for speech and language intervention in the public schools, then discovered later on that we actually get to serve quite a diverse population (pediatric to geriatric population) in various settings (schools, clinics, hospitals).

I applied to Biola University for Round 2 after graduating with a bachelor’s in missions and ministry. Biola is one of few programs in the country to incorporate a voluntary overseas training in speech-language pathology, and the only program to have a course dedicated to Theology of Disability. In the past year, God has opened doors for me to get accepted into this program in 2017, to travel and to have a deeper passion for mission work.

Fast forward to January of 2018-- I found myself sitting in front of 2 visitors who spoke about their ministry in Kampala, Uganda serving the children through speech and language intervention. When they asked us to join, I felt like it just made sense to go. To me, this trip is a wide opened door to walk through while celebrating God’s perfect timing to leave for my very first overseas mission trip.

This Summer, I will be spending 2 weeks in Uganda with some of these children at the International Schools, Centers for the Physically Handicapped, and in the slums of Katanga. I would love to share the extended version of this story with whoever is willing to listen! But for now, I’d like to ask you to partner with me in prayer and support.

The organization, Hope Speaks, is already doing a splendid job in Kampala providing speech and language intervention to children who are mild to severely handicapped, as well as in training parents and caretakers in order to equip and empower them. My team will join their work to provide additional support for two weeks in August.

Throughout most of Africa, disability is often perceived as a demon-possession or wrongdoing of the mother. The disabled are often abused or hidden away...some have never stepped foot outside of their house for decades at a time. To the 15-year-old girl who has been abused repeatedly by her neighbors because of her inability to communicate- receiving speech and language intervention is the beginning of hope and for communication. For the mother who carries all the guilt for her son with Autism, education and intervention tells her she is not at fault and that their future is bright.

I hope you will partner with me in loving these families of Kampala through your prayer and support.
