About this Fundraiser

Hello friends,

I will be volunteering this next school year as an English teacher in Poland. This will be an experience unlike any I have ever had. It will require my full effort. I will be away from everyone I’ve ever known, in a place where I do not speak the language. I could not be more excited.

I can’t entirely say why I chose this position, there’s just something “right” about it. I was walking one day last fall when I saw a sign on the lawn. It was an advertisement from the Student Missions office, saying they needed an English teacher in Poland. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Go to Poland? I’ve never been East of Montana (I recently went to Georgia). After six weeks of hard deliberation, I reached the point where I felt certain Poland was where I needed to go. That certainty has stuck with me. Even though the site director over there spent 30 minutes telling me all the ways I’m going to hate it, I am unshaken. When I think about the challenges that await me, I feel enthusiastic to meet them head on.

I feel good about the work I will be doing. I already know English, so that’s a good start. I do public speaking quite often and am comfortable standing in front of a crowd. I spent a couple years tutoring groups. It can be nerve-wracking going into new position, but I’m calm because I know I have the skills for this.

Even though I am graduating in June, I will be going through Walla Walla University’s Student Missions program. Everyone who goes as a missionary through the school has a fundraising goal of $3,500. This is where I need your help.

There are several costs associated with this experience: travel costs, visa costs, mailing costs, living costs while I’m out, and the list goes on. Each year, the student missionaries are required to raise the money needed. We do that by working in the community for donations, asking for donations from mission supporters, working with our local churches for help, and by earning as much as we can in addition to the money given. The funds are used to get us to our location, to make sure we’re cared for while we’re there, and then to bring us home. A portion of the fundraised money ($500) goes toward training and support offered through the SM office. Any excess funds I raise help other SMs to go, provide emergency aid, as well as help support SMs in the field.

I greatly appreciate your gift. The Polish College of Theology and Humanities depends on volunteers for their English program. By helping me with my fundraising, you are also helping between 30 and 50 Polish children continue their English education.

Thank you so much for your support,

William Johnson
