We're sending a crew of scientists including biologists, botanists, and entomologists to explore and document the diverse plants and animals that inhabit Northwest Arkansas's newest nature preserve, Blackburn Bluffs!
Blackburn Bluffs Preserve is part of the Boston Mountain Scenic Wildlife Corridor in southern Washington County. Purchased for conservation by the land trust in 2020, this 300 acre preserve provides scenic views along Interstate 49, is a critical wildlife corridor, and protects water quality for more than 200,000 residents. Climate change alongside rapid development of natural lands are contributing to the loss of biodiversity at alarming rates. The Northwest Arkansas Land Trust places a priority on protecting landscapes like Blackburn Bluffs that will preserve critical habitat for wildlife and native plants. These landscapes, if kept natural, will do the very most to create a more climate-resilient future for our developing NWA region. Our crew will spend 3 days at the end of April exploring the preserve, documenting every plant and animal species they can identify. This vital information will guide management plans for the preserve, as well as the potential for future public access and programming!
