Traveling to Haiti this past January with Help One Now has impacted my life in the most profound ways.  I saw things there that my eyes cannot un-see even if I wanted to.  Haiti is a breathtakingly gorgeous country, glorious in it's brokenness and home to the most beautiful people.  They have seen destruction both by Mother Nature and human corruption and evil.  Being there the week leading up to the five year anniversary of the earthquake added a heaviness to our trip that was felt in everything we did and every conversation we had.  We worshipped, we prayed, we brainstormed and we learned their stories.  We laughed, we cried, we bonded.  It was one of the hardest but very best weeks of my entire life. I am forever changed for the better for it.  Haiti is a part of me now.  The people and the children I met live in my heart.  There is a fire in my soul to help in any way and every way I can for my new friends. 

Why Education?

Because, the future of every country, city and community lies in the children.  This is a global truth.  The precious children I met in Haiti have been through the very worst of the worst.  They have been exposed to the most unimaginable, unspeakable things.  Things that my heart just cannot bear.  But you look in their eyes and see so much hope, so much love, so much excitement.  They sing.  They dance.  They laugh.  They play.  They learn.  They teach.  They are the future of Haiti.  And we can help them!  It's such a beautiful thing!!!

What is a Help One Classroom?

Help One Classroom, an initiative of Help One Now is an ongoing campaign to invest in the education of children in Haiti and Uganda.  Education transforms communities and breaks the cycle of extreme poverty.  And it all starts with TEACHERS.  A good teacher makes a world of difference, so we are raising funds for teacher salaries, training and supplies. By ensuring that the teachers can provide for themselves and their families, and equipping them with necessary supplies and training, we enhance the education our students receive...we bring opportunity and hope to the entire communities.

This hits home to me being a teacher here in Buda.  I think about these wonderful Haitian teachers every morning as I'm on my way to work...getting there so easily in my car after I've had a hot shower and everything I need to get ready for work.  I get to my classroom in my beautiful school and am surrounded by everything I could ever need to teach and I think of my Haitian teacher friends.  They walk miles to work long before the sun ever rises and make due with so little.  They have all the love in the world for the children they teach.  I want to be a part of this.
