Zimbabwe is a beautiful country with a tragic past. They’ve been in a state of desperate need for 20 years with little aid from the developed world. The lifestyle of the children of Zimbabwe is infinitely different than the average American. They sleep on the floor at night with no bedding, have little clean water and have hardly enough food to fill their stomachs. Even still, they walk 8 miles a day to the closest school available in order to gain an education.
What is truly inspiring is witnessing these little children under all their hardships and, seeing their smiles still bright on their faces with deep gratitude for what they’ve been given. They aren’t burdened by their own limitations. Rain or shine, they walk the distance to learn more so they can become more. These children endure ceaselessly because they know getting an education is they only way to obtain better opportunities. I cannot help but feel inspired by them.
As a civil engineering student at Texas A&M, all I want to do with the skills I’ve gained is to make life better for others. I’ve taken advantage of the many incredible opportunities in my life thus far, but none quite as impactful as this one.
This summer I am seizing an opportunity to use what I’ve learned in class and going to Zimbabwe in coordination with a wonderful non-profit called Sunshine Spaces. We are going to build a community center and help improve the structure of their school. This will increase the amount of safety in the area as well as give the young children a safe place to enjoy a full meal in their day.
To make this trip happen, I must raise about $3,000. This is what it will cost for travel, room and board. I am funding this effort myself and am asking for your help. I will be in Zimbabwe for 6 weeks building and learning. If you feel called to support me and Sunshine Spaces in Zimbabwe I will humbly accept any donation you can give. Please know, that anything you choose to donate is tax deductible.
I feel as though this is my calling, and once I graduate I plan to continue serving others in this way. This amazing opportunity will allow me to get to know a completely different culture as well as give me a chance to grow in knowledge, perspective, and purpose that cannot be taught within the walls of any classroom.
