What's the Need?
Right now there are over 65 million people in the world that are living as refugees. I am asking you to help my team made up mostly of members from the Baldwin Church of Christ in Fayetteville, co-sponsor the resettlement of a refugee family in NWA. These funds will go to securing housing, language and job training and initial supplies and settlement funds for the family we will be working with. Our family is scheduled to arrive in September. We are doing this in partnership with Canopy NWA a non-profit organization helping to resettle refugees in NW Arkansas. Canopy funds the majority of the cost of resettlement plus provides the services and training needed for a family to land on its feet and be successful and self sufficient members of our community in the first 90 days. Our team has committed to being involved with this family for at least 6 months to help them get on their feet and well on the path to being self-sufficient members of our community.
What's the Purpose?
Most refugees that are resettled in NWA have spent 15 - 20 years in a refugee camp (average time is 17 yrs). They come here with much hope for a new and better life but they have many challenges to overcome. Our team, in partnership with Canopy, will ensure that when they arrive they have a furnished home, access and transportation to learn English, medical care, receive job training and much more. After 90-120 days all able bodied refugees that have worked with Canopy are employed and on their feet in the U.S. My team will continue to walk with them for several months to be a support network and provide them with day to day skills such as how to buy groceries, how to find transportation, how to use the bike trail, how to use appliances, how to "call the hogs" and all the many other things that we enjoy as Americans.
All donations go directly to Canopy NWA.
