December 16, 2016 - We are home! Posted about ago

We made it home! We got 4.5 hours of sleep the morning of December 16 before we had to go to the notary. Jason had to give me power of attorney since he will not return to Ukraine to finalize adoption. From there we went to the US Embassy to sign more paperwork. Then off to the airport, through customs, security and to our gate with enough time to eat lunch! Our first flight from Kiev to Amsterdam was delayed in boarding. With that delay, it caused us to land later but we were assured we would have time to make our next flight. We quickly got off the plane but had to wait for a bus to take us to the main terminal and we still had to go through customs. We encountered the most issues with this security check which caused us to have to run to our gate. It was like the scene in the movie "Home Alone". We were the last two people to board our flight! Our 9 hour flight from Amsterdam to Atlanta was more turbulent than we would have liked at times and it was almost completely full. We had no extra room to stretch out and sleep, so our sleep was fitful. Thankfully we made it safely and landed on time. Once in Atlanta we went through passport check, customs, and security. We had three apples leftover from Ukraine. We did the right thing and reported them on our inventory paperwork for customs. However, this caused problems. Instead of telling you up front to dispose of the apples, they send you to an extra agricultural department security checkpoint to unpack everything you have in order to officially take the apples. Had we thought about it we would have eaten or thrown them away sooner. With the customs delay we once again had to rush to our gate. Our gate was B1 so when we saw the sign that pointed us to B1-B18 Jason joked and said, "Now watch....the gate numbers will count down backwards starting at 18." He was right! We had to walk quickly from B18 all the way to B1. Despite all that we actually got to our last flight with about 10 minutes to spare. Our flight from Atlanta to Denver left only a few minutes later than scheduled however we landed in blizzard conditions. God kept us safe and I was thankful I did not have a window seat to see how bad the conditions really were. After landing in Denver we had to wait on the run way for an hour for a plane to be towed away from our gate. Weather conditions were icy which caused problems in moving the other aircraft. We disembarked and went to baggage claim to wait another hour for crews to get the luggage off the plane. As we waited for the luggage we kept hearing announcements about all the cancelled flights so we were thankful we actually landed. Our very kind friend who had been waiting for us since midnight drove us home from the airport and we arrived home a little before 4:00 a.m. We were surprised that Zoey was up to greet us but we quickly sent her back to bed. We tried to wake Levi because he really wanted to see us but he slept through our attempts. Our children looked so peaceful in their slumber. How wonderful to see them again! Praise the Lord for bringing us home safely and getting us this far in the adoption process!
